Steadiness is so important for so many reasons; you want to be able to take your eyes off your young dog when he’s in a stay without worrying about him getting up and chasing something, or to take off after a rabbit, or a cat, when you’re walking him.
If you are going to take him out shooting then it is imperative that he has self-control as there will be an awful lot going on around him an awful lot of the time.
When you can leave your dog in a sit-stay and walk a circle around him, both one way and about turning and going back the other then it’s time to start putting down distractions; both whilst he’s in a sit-stay and when he’s walking to heel.
